The scourge of slavery enveloped the small island of Barbados between 1636 -1876 converting the island into the first black slave society. It was the auction center of slaves and an important center of commerce in the new world.

At this same time, the island also became the preferred port of call for the Atlantic whaling industry which slaughtered over 5 million whales within this period. Miraculously, it was on this island and in these most horrid conditions that a new bud of Art first bloomed. An art form so beautiful and so unique that the world still questions its origin. This book looks at the history of Barbados and the Sailors’ Valentine from a Barbadian perspective.
